Our History
Brighter Beginnings is a 501c3 nonprofit organization and has been responding to the needs of families in resource-poor neighborhoods since 1984 when our work began in response to the alarming differences in mortality and illness rates among African American babies compared to other children.
Brighter Beginnings has grown into a respected and well-connected organization with locations in Oakland, Richmond, Bay Point, and Antioch. We have a multi-cultural, bi-lingual staff of passionate and committed family-service professionals; in fact, many of our staff came to this work because of the challenges they faced in their own families.
About the role
This is a temporary receptionist position, working full-time at our office in Oakland, where our Mental Health and Early Childhood Development programs operate. This role supports the Program Assistant by taking on front desk duties. Additionally, the Temporary Receptionist assists with physical tasks of coordinating our donations, including driving, loading, unloading, and organizing donations of food, clothing, and diapers. The Temporary Receptionist will also assist with the seasonal Adopt-A-Family program.
1. Minimum of an Associate’s degree or equivalent in business, nonprofit or public administration preferred.
2. Two years of program assistance and/or administrative experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience preferred.
3. Bilingual in Spanish required.
4. Reliable car, valid driver’s license, insurance, and a driving record that meets our insurance requirements
5. Professionalism.
Core Responsibilities:
1. Answer the main phone and take messages or transfer calls; route incoming correspondence. Provide
information for callers seeking information about Brighter Beginnings.
2. Answer the front door to greet clients and other visitors. Be available to assist and direct people.
Receive Cake 4 Kids deliveries.
3. Assist in ordering supplies program/s office supplies.
4. Coordinate community donations programs like clothing drive, Food Bank, community donations, and
diaper distribution.
a. Food bank: Receiving food bank deliveries. Lifting and pushing up to 50lb at a time, unloading,
and organizing food in the food pantry. Throwing out expired food. Meet all food safety
standards.
b. Donations: Screen and receive donations. Organize donations onsite. Coordinating delivery of
donations to staff/clients.
c. Diapers: Organize labels. Load boxes onto hand trolleys, push trolley, lift and stack diaper
boxes to organize them by size and employee.
5. Assist with seasonal Adopt-A-Family program: coordinating the preparation, receiving gifts, and
distribution of gifts to clients.
6. Manages all client information with confidentiality.
7. Support/Coordinates special projects, activities or events as assigned by Supervisor and/or Sr. Program
Managers.
8. Other duties as assigned.
Benefits
There are no benefits or paid holidays for temporary roles, except:
- Paid Sick Leave accrual per CA law
- Medical insurance offered after 90 days of employment. 50% paid by employer.
- 13 unpaid holidays per year

4. Both standing and sitting are required, with most of the job time spent sitting. Approximately three-quarters of
the time is spent using a computer keyboard.
5. Various types of equipment/supplies are used to accomplish the job requirements and include, but are not limited to, pens, pencils, calculators, computer keyboards, telephone, printers, etc.
6. Required to drive to other work sites for meetings, conferences, etc.
